Changes to Building Codes Affect Renovations

Renovations can be complicated and expensive at the best of times.

The changes to Vancouver’s building bylaws that take effect on January 1st, 2015 are going to make them even more challenging.

The new bylaws will affect existing one and two family homes and has already created a backlog of applications at City Hall with people trying to get their permits in before the changes take effect.
The biggest changes in the new bylaw are the specific energy requirements and new regulations on stairs, handrails, and sprinklers.

How much your reno plans will be affected will depend on the reno value. For instance, renovations over $5,000 may have specific requirements for attic insulation or boiler and furnace replacements.

Here is a link to an article in the Globe & Mail that goes into more detail.
